MAITLAND City Council has approved an $850,000 multi-purpose recreation centre at Somerset Drive, Thornton.

The centre will include space for two playing fields, a cricket pitch, sports equipment and landscaping.

It will have 45 car spaces, change rooms, toilets and a canteen and a meeting room will be contained in a single-storey building.

Plans for the centre were developed after community consultation.

Maitland Mayor Peter Blackmore said the centre would be a tremendous asset for the Somerset Park area.
